The 2025 Washington State legislative session lasted105 days from January 13 to April 27.
Our priorities were the following:
1. Protect Our Communities
Our ask for legislators: We ask that you protect our fundamental constitutional rights to free speech and assembly and ensure our safety as we exercise them.
2. Ensure Education Equity and Accountability
Our ask for legislators:
- We ask that you, in your position as a lawmaker, help us urge OSPI and school districts to ensure that our community is safe.
- We ask that you support funding for curriculum development on Islamophobia, specifically: $240k of the general fund in 2026 and 2027.
Positive Outcomes:
- Secured $200,000 in the state budget for Islamophobia curriculum and single-handedly led the Muslim Coalition to secure those funds. This builds on our initial funding that we secured last year—$180,000 for the same curriculum.
- Successfully worked with OSPI to rewrite problematic guidance.
3. Fight Anti-Muslim Hate
Our ask for legislators:
- We ask that you commit to consult Muslim communities on topics that affect us, including religious discrimination, discrimination, immigration, and Islamophobia.
- We ask that you support SB 5106 and HB 1434, recognizing Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state holidays
Positive Outcomes:
- SB 5106 was passed, making Washington state the first state to officially recognize Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as holidays!
- We participated in a coalition working to recognize the life and killing of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi via HR 4661, a Resolution recognizing Aysenur Ezgi Eygi passed the House and SJM 8012, a Joint Memorial Senate Calls for Investigation into Her Killing, which has been introduced and will go through the legislature in 2026.
