(SEATTLE, WA, 6/16/2026) – The Washington state chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned a Seattle University provost’s aggressive action toward a Black Muslim student at the commencement ceremony, apparently based on the student’s religious and identity expressions.
On June 14, at a Seattle University commencement ceremony, a Muslim student walked across the stage to receive her diploma. She communicated to the provost that she does not shake hands with men for religious reasons, she then attempted to hold up her Palestinian flag and had it aggressively ripped away by the provost and subsequently physically accosted her.
Other identities and cultures were reportedly represented at the same graduation ceremony but did not face any censorship.

Imraan Siddiqi, CAIR-WA Executive Director, said:
“This blatant act of aggression and suppression is unacceptable. No provost should be getting physical with a student. We demand that Seattle University publicly apologize to the student.
“We are extremely troubled by this incident, which has now been seen worldwide. What was supposed to be a joyous day, has been traumatizing for this Muslim student and her family. We call on the university to apologize immediately.”
He said CAIR-WA is in active communication with the student to ensure she is safe and that there is accountability.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
